Marpan has led Tallahassee and North Florida in debris management and processing of residential and commercial recyclable materials since 1966. Our recycling facility has recovered more than 2 billion pounds of material that would have otherwise been buried in a landfill.
But that’s just part of the story.
Marpan’s state-of-the-art facilities sort and process residential and commercial waste efficiently and responsibly to support the local economy and preserve natural resources. We are the only facility in the region that sorts and recycles mixed loads of waste. And, through our partnerships with Leon County Solid Waste Management, the City of Tallahassee and Waste Pro, Marpan’s facility processes household recyclables from Leon, Wakulla, Jefferson, Gadsden and Franklin counties.
We are proud that our waste recovery rate of 55% far exceeds the national average of 32%.
Our ongoing commitment to recycling not only significantly reduces landfill use but decreases the demand for raw materials, conserving natural resources and minimizing environmental impact.
A Legacy of Visionary Leadership
Marpan founder Hugh Williams is an innovator and industry leader who has led the Tallahassee area in its recycling efforts for decades, even before the benefits were completely understood.
In 1986, when Hugh retired, Kim Williams continued his legacy through his passion, advocacy and investment in state-of-the-art technology. Kim continues to impact recycling and debris recovery methods to this day.
Kim completely changed the industry in 1991 when he traveled to Sweden searching for a solution for the growing problem of mercury contamination in the Florida Everglades. The state’s most important body of water was being poisoned by the irresponsible disposal of fluorescent lamps, or light bulbs, in municipal solid waste incinerators.
At the time, Marpan supplied these light bulbs to more than 70% of Florida’s state agencies and felt a moral obligation to help solve this environmental problem.
After confirming that the Swedish system worked, Kim returned and lobbied the Florida Legislature until it became law for commercial users of fluorescent light bulbs to recycle. In 1994, he built the first fluorescent light bulb recycling plant to Tallahassee.
Marpan is now under the leadership of Andrew Williams, who is continuing his father’s commitment to serve this community by finding innovative solutions to the growing challenges of responsible recycling and debris removal.

Over the last 20 years, Marpan has continued to innovate. In January 2009, Leon County Solid Waste Management and Marpan began a public-private partnership that closed the Leon County landfill to the public and diverted the waste to the Marpan recycling facility. This change has resulted in average recovery rate of materials previously headed to the landfill increasing by 67%. This process has also increased the recycling rate in Leon County by requiring that the material be processed before going to the landfill.
In February 2009, Marpan implemented Curbside Dual Stream Recyclables from their Leon County-franchised area through Waste Management. To respond to the increase of more than 300 tons of material each month, we constructed a state-of-the art line with more automation to handle curbside material in a single stream. This single stream process (a system where all recyclables are collected together in one bin and sorted later at a central facility) made recycling more accessible and convenient, and by 2013 all residential curbside recycling in Tallahassee was brought to Marpan to be processed.
Today, Marpan maximizes convenience to minimize impact on our customers and ultimately the impact on our landfills and natural resources.
